Location
Kalives is a sea-side village situated along the south side of Souda bay, overlooking a breathtaking beach. Legent has it that in the area, there exists an ancient city, once used as a port near Aptera.Nothing of the sort has been discovered axcept for a small Venetian Castle.Historians situate the ancient city of Tanou to be between Kalives and Almirida. The Arabs disembarked in the area in 826 A.D. In order to remain, they built huts and shacks, which is why the region was given its name (Kalives meaning simple structure or hut). A small lake crosses over the village which makes its way to the sea. The beach extends to a distance of 500 metres, whereas prior to entering the entrance of the village, a beach with golden- yellow sand and turquoise water can be found. Kalives is the ideal place to spend relaxing, carefree moments while on holiday, enjoying the hearby sea. It is also worth visiting the surrounding villages like Almirida and Plaka. You can also travel to these picturesque places using KTEL's bus services which offer outbound travel schedules or by car, taking the route for Rethymno with a detour towards Kalives. (20km from Hania) Souda is one of the largest ports in the mediterranean, used by both merchant and passenger vessels that connects, the district of Hania with Pirea. In additio, it is used as a naval base by Greek and Ailled forces. Tthroughout the course of mythology, a musical contest took place above Souda bay between the Muses and Sirens, where the Muses overruled and dominated. That is when the Sirens lost their wings and fell at the entrance of the bay, neating a traffic island of Poplar trees. Also the nearby city is called Aptera , meaning without wings. The city of Souda had been built over 130 years ago. Travellers are invited to explore and visit the harbour located in the southern part of Souda where fresh fish and sea food can be found in the picturesque tavernas of the region, but above all, a must for all travellers is a visit to the cualition memorial cemetery of the second word located in the area. Souda offers banking facilities, a library, exhibition areas, book shops a police station. Travellers can reach this area using the local buses whose terminal is located at the square of SOF.Venizelou (Publicmarket) or by car if one chooses to take the route to Rethymno. Kalami is a small village 8 km. east of Souda with few houses and a naturally quaint periphery. Here, travellers can enjoy the sunset while drinking authentic Greek coffee. Almirida is a small, picturesque settlement directly above the sea. Here, you can see ancient remains of the 11th century with an amazing mosaic. Two calm, sandy beaches stretch across along the eastern and southern part of the settlement, making them ideal for children. The beaches are quite narrow which, at times, give the impression of being full. In addition, a variety of great seafood tavernas are found in Almirida which directly overlook the sea.
